Thyme Cough Syrup

UPDATE: Please read this with this article.

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 T dried thyme
  • 1 C honey
  • bottle to store (we use an old pancake syrup bottle)

Pour boiling water over thyme in a measuring cup. We like to put the thyme in a teaball. If you don’t have a tea ball, you can make your own teabag by bundling the herb in a coffee filter, then closing it with a twist-tie.

Leave the thyme in the water until the water cools to room temperature. Remove the thyme from the water and discard. Stir in honey. Pour into storage container and keep in the refrigerator.

To use: Shake well before using. Take one tablespoon several times a day for colds, coughs, and sore throat.

Recipe taken from Jude’s Herbal Remedies, on page 96.

NOTES: We have found this cough syrup very handy with my son’s wheezing. He was diagnosed with RAD as a toddler. He was prescribed an albuterol inhaler, he never liked taking it. Although his doctor said he had outgrown the RAD diagnosis and it was not serious enough to diagnose chronic asthma, he still had problems during allergy season. When we moved, we lost the inhaler and he had a bad day. So, I tried the cough syrup and within 10 minutes, it was as if he hadn’t had a problem at all. Obviously, I’m not a doctor or certified herbalist. I am just sharing my experiences. It is now the only thing we use for his wheezing. Of course, if it did not work, we would immediately take him to a doctor or hospital for further treatment.

In a future post, I will share what I have learned about thyme and why it is so effective.

Thanks for the recipe! I just made it last night for our 1 yr. old baby and he was able to get rid of his cough long enough to catch some zzzzz’s.
